DTF vs. Sublimation: A Simple Guide for Crafters

By Olivia on Jan 13, 2026

If you’re a crafter looking to make custom shirts or other items, you’ve likely heard of sublimation. But have you tried DTF (Direct to Film) printing? Let’s compare these two popular methods simply—with a focus on why DTF is often the better pick for many projects.

Both DTF and sublimation make bright, full-color designs. But they work very differently, and DTF has big advantages for most crafters.

How Do They Work?

· Sublimation: Uses special ink that turns to gas when heated. The ink soaks into fabric fibers, giving a smooth “no-hand feel” (you can’t feel the design). But here’s the catch: It only works on light-colored polyester or specially coated hard surfaces (like mugs). It has no white ink, so any white in your design will just be the color of the blank item.

· DTF (Heat-Transfer Film): Uses heat-activated glue to stick the design to the item’s surface. This is where DTF shines—it works on any color and nearly any fabric (cotton, polyester, blends, nylon). The finished design is soft, flexible, and has just a slight feel (hardly noticeable).

When to Choose DTF (The Best Pick for Most Projects)

DTF is your go-to if:

· You use colored or dark fabrics (sublimation can’t handle these!)

· Your project uses cotton, nylon, or blended materials (sublimation only works on polyester)

· You need fast results for small, on-demand orders (DTF turns around quickly)

· You want one transfer for multiple projects (works on different fabrics)

Pro-Tip: Grab our DTF Transfers by Size for any fabric project—easy and versatile!

When to Choose Sublimation (Only for Specific Cases)

Sublimation only makes sense if:

· You’re using light-colored polyester blanks

· You’re decorating hard surfaces (mugs, tumblers) with special coatings

· You need a “no-hand feel” print (and don’t mind the fabric/size limits)

For most crafters, DTF’s flexibility (any fabric/color), speed, and ease make it the top choice. Sublimation is great for specific projects, but DTF lets you take on more orders and get creative with any blank.
